What We Do
At Starts With One Today, we rescue the forgotten. The suffering. The silent.
Our work takes us to the front lines, deep into the streets of Skid Row, where dogs and cats are fighting to survive in some of the most heartbreaking conditions imaginable.
These animals are not just homeless; they are often abused, neglected, and starved. Many live tethered to tight chains or padlocks, unable to move freely. Some are victims of dog fighting, others lie motionless under scorching tarps, suffering from heatstroke and dehydration.
We’re not just rescuers, we’re advocates.
The animals suffering on Skid Row have no voice. And so far, the legal system hasn’t spoken for them either. So we do.
Every single day, we’re working to get these animals the justice they deserve.
We’re confronting cruelty head-on and challenging the broken systems that allow it to continue. Through legal action, political advocacy, and public pressure, we are demanding better, not just for the animals we save, but for all those still waiting.

When Possible, We Rescue
When pet owners are willing to surrender their animals in hopes of giving them a better life, we step in immediately, taking full custody and responsibility. We rush them to trusted veterinarians for urgent and comprehensive care, including:

Vaccinations

Emergency medical treatment

Spay and neuter procedures

Flea, tick, and parasite prevention
We then place them in loving foster homes and work tirelessly to find them the forever families they deserve.
When We Can’t Remove the Animal, We Still Help
Some owners will not relinquish their pets, but we don’t turn our backs.
Instead, we provide lifesaving support, including:

Leashes, collars, and harnesses

Compassionate education and relationship-building with pet owners
